Qualcomm unveiled the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at its annual Snapdragon Tech Summit. This chip will be used in premium Android smartphones coming next year. As always, the biggest question is: how much better is its performance? Initial tests and benchmarks clearly show that this chip has significantly improved over last year's.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 uses the third-generation Oryon CPU core. Its Prime core now clocks up to 4.6 GHz, which is faster than the previous generation. The company claims a 20% improvement in CPU performance and a 16% gain in power efficiency. Geekbench 6 data also shows that this series has improved performance by approximately 65% over the past two years.
Speaking of graphics, it features a new Adreno GPU, which is 23% faster and consumes 20% less power. This means gaming and high-graphics tasks will run smoother. In 3DMark tests, this chip outperforms current flagship phones. However, thermal control may cause slight performance reduction during prolonged gaming.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 also brings significant upgrades to AI performance. Its hexagonal NPU is now 37% faster, and SME support has been added to the CPU, allowing AI tasks to run faster directly on it. The company says this chip will support personalized AI agents that can provide real-time suggestions by gathering data from the camera and microphone.
For connectivity, it features a new X85 modem and FastConnect 7900 chip, which provides improved speeds and power savings across both Wi-Fi 7 and 5G.
